The other week, I had the pleasure of teaming with City Year and working alongside more than 75 of my colleagues and partners at NTT Communications and Blue Coat to turn an outdoor courtyard into a beautiful garden and play area for students at PS/MS 161 – Don Pedro Albizu Campos School in New York City.

City Year is an education-focused non-profit organization that partners with public schools to provide full-time, targeted intervention for at risk students. The school is located in New York City’s fifth school district with 886 students in pre-kindergarten through seventh grade. Together, volunteers and students painted murals for the courtyard walls, built bookcases, and constructed and painted nearly 30 bright flower boxes and planters, which we filled with hundreds of seasonal flowers. It was an exciting day. While painting and building, we had the opportunity to connect with the students and talk about the books they’re reading, their favorite classes and what sports they play.

I consider myself fortunate to work for a company that cares about the work-life balance of its employees and provides them with time to give back to local communities through charities and causes of their choice, and corporate-driven ones like the program with City Year. Through Heads, Hearts and Hands, everyone at Dimension Data is allocated eight hours of paid time off annually to volunteer. Worldwide, Dimension Data employees participate in more than 500 different volunteer and community outreach initiatives each year.

Additionally, we’re very excited that NTT Communications decided to join Dimension Data & Blue Coat for our fourth annual day of service with City Year. As a new member of the NTT family, we value sharing resources and working together to address social and environmental issues, ethics and governance.

Our work at PS/MS 161 – Don Pedro Albizu Campos School’s courtyard may be complete, but our team is already excited for their next day of service.
