What’s helping or hindering IT professionals accelerate digital transformation?
Business executives around the world want the game-changing advantages of transformative technologies. And they want it now. It’s been shown that these technologies can speed time-to-market for digital products and services, and provide the agility organisations need to adjust to today’s fast-changing business environment.
In a recent blog post, I reflected on the findings of a recent report published by the Business Performance Innovation (BPI) Network in partnership with Dimension Data, which suggests that business executives are generally dissatisfied with the pace of innovation in their IT organisations. So what’s getting in the way?
According to the BPI’s latest report, frontline IT workers around the globe are struggling to implement transformational technologies within their organisations due to a lack of long-term planning, insufficient funding, and ineffective communication and collaboration with their colleagues within the business.
The report raises significant questions as to whether IT teams have the tools, training, and strategic grounding they need to deliver on the hype associated with transformational technologies. Over 80% of IT professionals surveyed said they spend more than half their time maintaining legacy systems instead of driving innovation and 17% said they spend more than 90% of their time on routine maintenance tasks.
Among the survey’s major findings:
- 70% of respondents say they have not even begun or are ‘just getting started’ on the road to transformation.
- Only 36% rate their company’s ability to adapt as ‘good’ or ‘very good’.
- 37% listed application development and data analysis as their team’s greatest weaknesses, the very areas where strength is required.
